2020
Thanks to all observers for their records, especially Stanford Ringing

(FG), Dan March (DM), Matt Jackson (MJ), Chris Begley (CB), Peter

2020 |
Thanks to all who have sent their
sightings in - this is much appreciated. 2020 has been a weird and
challenging year for
all of us but I hope that the birds you have seen at Stanford have
helped you get through this year. Overall, the species list for 2020
was
a new site record of 164 species, beating the
previous best of 160 set in 2017. There are many highlights but here
are a few:
Iceland (and Kumlien's), Glaucous Gull
and Kittiwake were among 12 species of gull
recorded. Terns were headed up by the appearance of CASPIAN
TERNS in May and July, the first at the site for 50 years. In
addition, Little, Arctic and Black
were also recorded. We have had 6 Marsh Harriers
during 2020 as well as several Merlin and Osprey.
2020 delivered a number of species not seen for some years including: Bearded
Tit, 3 Shag, 4 Black-necked
Grebes, Barnacle Goose, Crossbill,
Rock Pipit, Wood Warbler, Bittern,
Scaup, Lesser Spotted
Woodpecker, Smew and Nightjar.
More from the ringing group on the blog I'm sure but some highlights of
an amazing year have included: 2 Wryneck, Yellow-browed
Warbler, Marsh Warbler, Firecrest,
Pied Flycatcher, Tree Pipit,
Whinchat, Common Buzzard, a
record number of Redstarts, Common Redpoll
and of course the first ever Bearded Tits ringed at
the site. In all, 68 species ringed in 2020, a new group
record.
Despite the lack of mud we have managed to record 18 species of wader
in 2020 the highlights being Black-tailed and Bar-tailed
Godwit, Ringed Plover,
Jack Snipe, Wood Sandpiper
and Whimbrel.
No new additions to the overall site species list in 2020 although Kumlien's
Gull (a sub species of Iceland Gull) was
new to the site and only the third Northamptonshire record. |

**CASPIAN TERN**
1 flew west to east through the reservoir at 07.50 this morning. Likely
to be the same bird that was at Slimbridge yesterday afternoon (and
possibly Frampton Marsh over the past 2 weeks) and now following the
Severn to Ouse Washes flyway (which takes the bird broadly through the
reservoir). Third record for the site following the bird in May 2020
and June 1968 (CMH, M Townsend, D Sheffield, J Alderton). This
is the 9th record for Leicestershire & Rutland and the 7th
record for Northants.

Q4 Review | The final quarter of 2019 continued to deliver some quality birds. A Skylark
was ringed early in October, the first to be ringed at the site since
1980. A real rarity from the east arrived on the 12th October in the
form of a Yellow-browed Warbler, the 5th record for the site (4 ringed). Great Egret sightings started to become more frequent as the winter months approached and a Ring Ouzel was found by Steve on the 14th. Marsh Harrier put in a couple of brief appearances but on the 25th October two real crackers arrived in the form of 3 Waxwing and a Firecrest, both found by Mick Townsend. A Siberian Chiffchaff was also ringed. A further 10 Waxwing were seen briefly by Dan March and Matt Jackson and Brambling was also added to the year total. 9 Bewick's Swans were found by Steve on 24th November, the first at the site since 2007 followed soon after by a Dark-bellied Brent Goose the first at the site since 2014 (both high quality additions to the 2019 total). Several Woodcock were seen and the year finished off with a further 2 Bewick's Swans at the end of December. This quarter took the total for the site for 2019 to 154, the second best year ever. |

September
Q3 Review
| At the end of the 3rd quarter of 2019 our
overall species list had risen to 148. This is already looking like an
excellent year despite the high water levels and lack of mud. July
kicked off well with 4 Common Scoter and a colour-ringed Common Sandpiper. A Garganey was found later in the month, the first since 2017. Marsh Harrier
was added to the 2019 total towards the end of the month along with
another 9 Arctic Terns arriving in inclement weather. The first Tree Pipit arrived
on 20/8 (1 ringed by SRG) followed by a further 5 over the next few
days. The 24th August was a special day with over 500 birds
ringed including 6 Redstart, Wheatear and 6 Grasshopper Warblers. A Pied Flycatcher was also seen briefly on the same day, a rare visitor to the site, along with 3 Whinchat and 4 Black Terns. 4 Ruff
flew through at the end of August when 4 Greenshank were also found. 2
Ruddy Shelducks were found mid-September along with the first Stonechat. The month was finished off with a landmark 2000th Blackcap ringed by the SRG and a flyover Spoonbill on the 28th. |
